Originally from Stewarton, but now living in Kilmarnock, Willie is one of the founding directors of Allied Business Finance, bringing a wealth of experience to the business. We recently sat down with Willie to hear more about his career journey, his passions, the lessons he’s picked up along the way, and his vision for the future of ABF.
So how long have you been in finance and what sectors do you specialise in?
I’ve been in the finance industry for over 40 years, specialising in Asset Finance for the last 25 years.
What do you enjoy outside of work that helps you recharge?
I’ve always been a football fan – Kilmarnock FC are my team. I love golf and I’ve recently taken up Padel which keeps me active.
Any dislikes?
I’m highly competitive, so getting beat at any of my hobbies is tough to take.
What is your most embarrassing moment?
After proudly passing my driving test, I managed to crash my car just one week later! Not my finest hour…
Moving on to your career, what was your very first job, and what did it teach you?
I was brought up on a dairy farm, and I had general farm duties from an early age. It was hard work, but it taught me that effort and perseverance always bring rewards.
What’s one decision or turning point that changed your path in an unexpected way?
In 2007, I walked away from my job at RBS Group to start out on my own as a broker. With a young family, it felt like a huge gamble. Then the financial crisis hit, which really tested me, and I had to dig deep and stay resilient. But honestly, it turned out to be the best move I’ve ever made in my career.
If you weren’t in this role, what’s another career you could imagine yourself in?
I’d probably be back in general banking, with one of the big high-street banks.
Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your career?
Allan Ross, former Managing Director (now retired) of First Independent Finance who gave me my first opportunity to be a broker back in 2007.
What’s been your favourite deal and why?
It wasn’t the biggest deal, but back in 2001 I helped a start-up get a van through a small asset finance agreement. Nearly 25 years later, that same client is still with me.
For me, that’s what this job is all about and is proof that building long-term relationships is more important than the size of the deal.
What advice would you give your younger self just starting out?
Simple. Work hard and you will achieve.
How do you personally handle setbacks or challenges?
I try to keep it straightforward – look at where you went wrong, learn from it and don’t repeat the mistake in the future.
What do you hope people say it feels like to work with you?
I’d like to think that people would say that I’m professional and that I am reliable.
(Guess what Willie? They do!)
