Conor Fitzsimmons

Meet Conor Fitzsimmons, Founding Director of Allied Business Finance

Conor Fitzsimmons hails from Irvine, Ayrshire and began his finance career in 2016. A British Army veteran, he is one of the Founding Directors of Allied Business Finance and is known for his disciplined approach and dedication to supporting businesses.

We caught up with Conor to discuss his career so far, what drives him, the lessons he’s learned, and what excites about the future of ABF.

So how long have you been in finance, and what sectors do you specialise in?

I’ve been in finance for about 9 years now, and along the way, I’ve also gained a Diploma in Asset Finance from the London Institute of Banking & Finance. Most of my work is in asset finance, and I’ve helped businesses in various sectors – anywhere companies need the right funding to get the tools and equipment that keep them moving.

What do you enjoy outside of work that helps you recharge?

For me, it’s fishing – it’s the perfect way to switch off and recharge. I’m also a big fan of MMA, and my favourite fighter is Max Holloway. He’s the former featherweight champion and current BMF Champion (Google it if you don’t know!). I love his resilience and durability – qualities I think are just as important in life as they are in the octagon.

Any dislikes?

Two things top the list: temporary traffic lights (they always appear when I’m in a rush and they are always, always on red!) and mushrooms – which, in my book, should never be allowed near a plate.

Moving on to your career, what was your very first job, and what did it teach you?

I joined the British Army at 17. It was a crash course in staying cool under pressure and learning to improvise, adapt and overcome – lessons that have stuck with me ever since and remain incredibly useful today.

What’s one decision or turning point that changed your path in an unexpected way?

It has to be the day I called Allan Ross from an oil rig in the North Sea! I’d left the Army and was looking for a career change, so I just picked up the phone and asked if he had any finance roles. That one call set me on the path I’m still on today.

If you weren’t in this role, what’s another career you could imagine yourself in?

I’d have re-joined the Army and stayed there until retirement. There’s something about that life – the structure, the challenge, and knowing you’re part of something bigger, that really appealed to me.

Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your career?

I’ve got to say Allan Ross. That phone call to him changed everything. If it hadn’t happened, I probably wouldn’t be part of ABF today, so he’s had a huge impact on both my career and life.

What’s been your favourite deal and why?

One of my most rewarding deals was helping a new coach company secure its first vehicle. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of watching the business grow steadily, and seeing their dedication and hard work pay off has been incredibly satisfying. It’s a reminder that finance isn’t just about numbers – it’s about supporting people and enabling long-term business success.

What advice would you give a young Conor Fitzsimmons just starting out?

I’d say believe in yourself, be honest with people even when it’s not what they want to hear and never stop learning. Staying true to these principles has guided my career and helped me build lasting relationships and make sound decisions along the way.

How do you personally handle setbacks or challenges?

When I face setbacks or challenges, I start by writing down everything that’s causing an issue. I then identify what’s beyond my control and set that aside, focusing my energy on finding solutions for the things I can influence. It’s a practical approach that keeps me focused and helps turn challenges into actionable steps.

What do you hope people say it feels like to work with you?

I’d like people to say that working with me is straightforward and hassle-free, and that their business’s finance needs are in safe, reliable hands. Building trust and providing clarity is always my priority.

(Well, they say that and more!)

I have worked with Conor at Allied Business Finance for a number of years now, to arrange finance for our business. His professionalism, clear communication and attention to detail make the process smooth and stress-free. We would have no hesitation recommending him to others in the industry “

What excites you most about the company’s future?

I’m most excited about the potential for growth in the sector, particularly with new and emerging technologies. Being part of a team that can embrace innovation and help businesses access the funding they need to adapt and thrive is incredibly motivating.
