Rob Murray and Team

Meet Rob Murray, Founding Director of Allied Business Finance

Living in Tain in the heart of the Scottish Highlands, Rob Murray brings a wealth of experience to the asset finance industry. With a background that spans major institutions like Barclays and Bank of Scotland, he made the move into the broker sector in 2005 and hasn’t looked back since.

We sat down with Rob to hear more about his career journey, what drives him personally and professionally, the lessons he’s learned along the way, and his thoughts on the future direction of ABF.

So how long have you been in finance and what sectors do you specialise in?

Let’s just say… a very long time, over 40 years! I’ve worked across pretty much every business sector you can think of construction, transport, agriculture, groundscare — you name it, I’ve probably helped finance it.

What do you enjoy outside of work that helps you recharge?

Golf is my main escape. I’m a proud member at Royal Dornoch Golf Club — I’ve done my time as Captain, and I’m now a Vice President and the Capital Projects Convenor. I am currently involved in projects like the new clubhouse. I’m also a football fan and enjoy watching and following most sports.

Any dislikes?

Mushrooms. Can’t stand the things. Just… no.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

Too many! But there was the time I was served a big bowl of mushroom soup. I knew exactly what it was, but I was far too polite to say anything! So, I smiled, ate the lot, and told the host how lovely it was. My wife, of course, couldn’t resist chiming in: “That’s funny, I thought you hated mushrooms.” Busted!

Moving on to your career, what was your very first job, and what did it teach you?

My first role was as a Branch Trainee with the Bank of Scotland. It mainly involved basic administration; including filing cheques, which quickly taught me that wasn’t something I wanted to do for the rest of my life! What it did teach me, though, was how to get along with people from all walks of life, and I discovered that I enjoyed meeting and helping new people.

What’s one decision or turning point that changed your path in an unexpected way?

After gaining solid training and experience in asset finance with Barclays Group and Bank of Scotland, I decided to take the leap into self-employment 22 years ago. Becoming an Asset Finance Broker was a real turning point. It gave me far more freedom and balance, and it’s greatly improved my working life.

If you weren’t in this role, what’s another career you could imagine yourself in?

A bit of a leap, but a professional golfer! Though I suspect life on the breadline might have come with that, so it’s probably best it stayed a dream!

Who has been the biggest influence or mentor in your career?

I’ve been fortunate to learn from so many people over the years – colleagues, clients, and friends. Each one has helped shape how I work and how I see things, both professionally and personally.

What’s been your favourite deal and why?

For me, it’s never about a single deal – it’s about the relationships behind them. I really value building long-term partnerships with clients, understanding their business, and being there to support their growth over time. That’s where the real job satisfaction comes from.

What advice would you give your younger self just starting out?

Believe in yourself. Keep a positive, can-do attitude, and enjoy the journey. You never stop learning, every day really is a school day!

How do you personally handle setbacks or challenges?

I try not to dwell on them. I take what I can from the experience, learn the lessons, and move forward. You’ve got to dust yourself down and keep going, that’s how you grow.

What do you hope people say it feels like to work with you?

I’d like to think people see me as someone they can trust. Someone who understands their business, is approachable, and genuinely has their best interests at heart. I always aim to be available, offer sound advice, and provide financial solutions that make a real difference.

(Yes, they absolutely do…)

“We’ve used Rob at ABF since 2011. I deal with lots of different suppliers of services, but I can honestly say none come close to giving the reliable, honest and easy support offered by Rob and his team. My suppliers are always surprised by the speed our finance deals are organised and paid out. I would never hesitate in recommending Rob and his services to anyone.”

Jeff, Highlands Utility Company

What excites you most about the company’s future?

What really excites me is the shared ambition we have as a close-knit team to grow the business on our own terms. We’ve all come from different backgrounds with a huge amount of experience across the industry, and when we bring that together, it makes us so much stronger as a group than we’d ever be individually. There’s a real sense of teamwork, trust, and shared purpose, and that’s what drives us forward.
